All websites and systems have now been migrated and the old server has been unplugged. There are still a few bugs showing up across the new system but generally it seems to be working fine.
The main drawback with the new system is that it doesn’t allow subdomains to use “www.”.
For instance: http://Science.prodos.org works
But: www.Science.prodos.org does not work.
We’ve been trying to find a way around this, but no luck yet.
The newhostingservicehas abouttwice the space and about twice the bandwidth of the old one. This is a big plus when it comes to projects such as SolidVox.com which use a LOT of space and bandwidth.
However, unlike the old server, we no longer have unlimited databases.
The other loss with the new system is that it cannot run the mailman lists at prodoscope.com so I’m looking around for some alternatives.
Unfortunately, running a dedicated server over the last few years has been a great pain. The dedicated server was subjected to constant attacks, hacks, and crashes, and meant that several times per year I had to fork out a lot of money to hire a Linux expert to restore and secure the server.
The new system is not a dedicated server and so I’ll have none of these problems- which cost a lot of time and lots of money – anymore, thank goodness!
Onwards!
… and what about the infestation of Scandinavian characters in all the posts and in the sidebar (at least on my site – primarily A with ~)? When will they go away.
I would really hate to hear that they all have to be removed manually!?
Please don’t tell me that.

Good afternoon Dan.
Unfortunately, those stray characters are going to have to be removed manually.
Davide and I have tried everything we can think of to work out some wholesale method for removing or fixing the stray characters, but without success.
We spent some time on a couple of the non-English blogs – which were very badly affected – removing and fixing the characters manually.
This is a once-off problem that’s occurred across ALL the blogs – and indeed all PRODOS websites and systems. It only affects past posts.
i.e. New posts are showing no problem.
The stray characters have ended up in the database of all the sites that got migrated to the new server, and I just don’t know how this has happened, but now we’re stuck with it.
What an awful nuisance for everyone.
I’m happy to help you with the job of manually fixing the problem on your blog. I’ll write to you privately to make sure you get my offer to help out.
Very, very sorry about this problem.

On the one hand, I hate to ask it (ouch, altruism?). On the other… it is your mess, so I’ll let you clean it up (Objectivism!).
You’re a gentleman, and honorable . I much appreciate your doing this. Go ahead (at your convenience – and I know, it’s not convenient at all). Just let me know when you’re starting and when done – as you have offered to do.
I’ve got some bones to pick with you (through rational argument via blogs of course, if I ever get to it), about your assessment of Dr. Leonard Peikoff. BUT, I admire you greatly for all you do in the promotion of Capitalism – from the right moral foundation – and I appreciate the
opportunity to blog with you at thinkertothinker.com.
So, carry on and carry through!
Thank you Prodos,
Dan
